Lassetter Family Cemetery

LassetterCemeteryThe Lassetter Family Cemetery is located on Hutcheson Ferry Farms in Whitesburg, GA. This land was once a part of Campbell County and is significant to the history of Chattahoochee Hills because (it is believe that) Cheadle Cochran is buried there. Cheadle was a state senator and operated a mill in Campbell County in what is today Cochran Mill Park in Chattahoochee Hills. There are also decedents from the Lassetter Family currently living in our city.

Benjamin and Elizabeth Lassetter received this land in a 200-acre land grant. They lived in a log cabin located across from the cemetery on the left side of the road. This cabin overlooked the Chattahoochee River, which they crossed by Hutcheson’s Ferry.

We’ve been told that there are at least 50 graves in this cemetery, although there are only two markers with inscriptions (Boon #1 and Wester #8). Some say it was a common practice for a family to allow community members to be buried in their cemetery.

The two box tombs shown above are believed to be the graves of Cheadle Cochran (b. 1786-1790,
d. 27 Nov. 1878) and his wife Mary, who was the sister of Elizabeth Lassetter (Hill).

Jesse Boon, son-in-law of Benjamin Lassetter, is buried in the tall monument (#1), which also lists Nancy Boon (Lassetter), wife of Jesse.

Elizabeth Lassetter (b. 02/17/1785, d. 07/14/1852) is believed to be buried in a box tomb (#6).

Benjamin Lassetter (b. 12/12/1778, d. 08/23/1869) may be buried in St. Paul Methodist Church Cemetery, Whitesburg, GA.
